Full Description

The British Gold Sovereign has been minted for 200 years, since 1817. These gold coins are recognized the world over for their value and distinctive designs. Produced by the Royal Mint in London, this coin is also made in Canada, India, Australia and South Africa. British gold sovereigns have traditionally been minted in 22-karat fine gold, also known as “crown gold.” The 5-pound gold sovereigns contain 0.2354 troy ounce of .9167 pure gold, giving them intrinsic value for investors. Collectors look forward to completing a collection of all the different designs and admire their beauty and quality.

Obverse

The obverse of the 5-pound English sovereign varies and is based on the seated monarch at the time the coin was minted. A regal portrait of that monarch is displayed on the front of the coin, along with engravings around the outer edge for their name and titles.

Reverse

The back of the coin features an image of St. George riding a horse as he slays a dragon. This design was created by the famed Italian engraver, Benedetto Pistrucci, who was the chief medalist at the London Royal Mint from 1817 to near the end of his life.
