Originally designed by James Earle Fraser for the Buffalo Nickel, or Indian Head Nickel, in 1913: the design has seen a comeback thanks to the Gold Buffalo bullion coin program.
One June 22, 2006, the United States Mint offered the first ever 24-karat bullion coin released by the facility and that coin was non-other than the American Gold Buffalo bullion coin! The creation of the series was part of the provisions set in the Presidential $1 Coin Program enacted on December 22, 2005.
Section 5112 of title 31, United States Code, is amended— (1) in subsection (a), by adding at the end the following: ‘‘(11) A $50 gold coin that is of an appropriate size and thickness, as determined by the Secretary, weighs 1 ounce, and contains 99.99 percent pure gold.’’
