The U.S. Mint’s commitment to quality is more than evident in this 1 oz. 2015 Gold Buffalo MS69 First Strike PCGS coin. The choice of the James Earle Fraser design was an excellent one, reminding America of the true nobility of its indigenous tribes and the majesty of the free-roaming buffalo that was so much a part of their world. As an MS69 Uncirculated First Strike coin, this Gold Buffalo is a fine example of the Buffalo Series of .9999 fine bullion and one of the first released after the first issue of the 2015 coin.

The obverse design was originally created by James Earle Fraser for the 1913 release of the “Buffalo Nickel” and features the profile of a Native American and slightly modified for the modern Gold Buffalo $50 bullion coin. Fraser’s models included three notable chiefs: Big Tree, Iron Tail and Two Moons. The only other markings on the obverse are the word Liberty, the year, and F for the designer Fraser.

Featured on the reverse is the iconic symbol of America’s past, the majestic buffalo. Inspired by Black Diamond, a bison in the New York City Zoo, the buffalo stands on a mound of dirt with its head gently bowed. The coin’s 1 oz. weight, .9999 Fine Gold purity, the $50 denomination and the motto In God We Trust are engraved below the bison, while United States of America and the motto E Pluribus Unum are featured above the buffalo.
