Full Description

Authorized by Congress in 1985 and first minted in 1986, American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins are minted according to the durable, 22-karat standard established for circulating gold coinage 350 years ago. Each coin contains its full, stated weight of pure gold, which by law, must be taken from newly mined sources in America. The balance consists of silver and copper, added to increase the coin's durability.

The 2015 1 ounce Gold American Eagle continues the legacy started nearly 30 years ago. Comprised of 1 troy ounce of 22-karat gold, the coin is a popular item among collectors and investors alike because it has such a low premium.

The Obverse

Shown on the front of the coin is a modern rendition of the Augustus Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, first minted in 1907 the historic design is considered to the most beautiful minted by the United States. At the center, Lady Liberty stands in full figure detail, with her billowing gown and hair creating motion around her. In her hands she holds a torch above her head, and in the other an olive branch. The U.S. Capital building can be seen in the background and surrounding her figure are stylized sun rays. "Liberty" and the date are inscribed within the design.

The Reverse

On the back of the coin is a modern addition to the otherwise historically accurate coin. Designed by Miley Busiek in 1985 for the reverse of the gold bullion coin series, the image features a American bald eagle flying towards and extending an olive branch towards a mother eagle and her hatchling. "United States of America," "E Pluribus Unum," and "In God We Trust" are included in the design and guarantees for the coins weight, purity and denomination are included below.
