Full Description

2008 ½ oz. Gold Martin Van Buren’s Liberty $10 MS-70 First Ladies have played various important roles through the years, supporting their president-husbands in countless ways. The First Spouse series of commemorative gold coins honored the presidents’ wives in the order they resided in the White House. The series’ first four coins were released in 2007 with a weight of 1/2 oz. of fine gold, the first 1/2 oz. coins in the history of the U.S. Mint. Martin Van Buren’s First Spouse coin was to be released in 2008, but there was one problem: Van Buren was a widower throughout his time in the White House. Since the obverse of the coin needed to show an image of the president’s wife and he had no wife, his First Spouse coin featured Lady Liberty. Offered here in MS-70 Uncirculated condition, this coin is a beautiful addition to any numismatic collection.

Obverse

A rendition of the Seated Liberty design of earlier U.S. coinage, the coin features Lady Liberty seated on a rock. In her right hand, Liberty holds a striped shield engraved with the word ‘Liberty.’ In her left hand, she holds a liberty pole, an early symbol of freedom. Also on the obverse are the words 8th Presidency’ above the figure and below the figure, the dates ‘1837-1841,’ which were the years of his presidency, and the motto ‘In God We Trust’ with the coin’s year, 2008.

Reverse

The reverse shows an image of a young Martin Van Buren, seated against a tree in a grassy area, in front of a large building of the time, with a gentleman riding by between them on a noble horse. Above the image are the words ‘United States of America,’ while below are the motto ‘E Pluribus Unum,’ the $10 face value, 1/2 oz. weight and .9999 fine gold purity.
