The first Spouses coins were released with the release of the President Dollars. These coins marked an honorable mention in the United States history immortalizing the hard work that the First ladies have put behind the scenes.

In cases where the President didn't have a wife during his term as the President, the obverse of such coins would feature a portrait of Lady Liberty from the same era.

Thomas Jefferson’s first spouse coin was the third coin in the installment of the First Spouses series. The term of his office as President was 1801 - 1809.

The Obverse:

The Obverse features the portrait of Lady Liberty from the half cent coin  with a Draped Bust which was produced between 1800 - 1808.The Obverse also has the following inscribed: 3rd Presidency 1801 - 1809 W, In God We Trust - 2007, Designed by : Robert Scot, Re- sculpted by : Phebe Hemphill

The Reverse :

The Reverse of the coin shows a monument dedicated to Thomas Jefferson at his former house in Monticello. The inscriptions on the monument have also been inscribed on the coin. : “Here was buried Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, of the statute of Virginia for religious freedom and the father of the University of Virginia. Born April 2, 1743, O.S. Died July 4, 1826."

Other Inscriptions included: United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, denomination of $10, Gold content - 1/2 Oz., Gold purity - .9999 fine gold
