Full Description

The 2007 Thomas Jefferson's Liberty Gold Coin was the third issue of the First Spouse Gold Coin Program. Since he did not have a spouse during his presidency, the coin bears an image of Liberty from a circulation coin of his era. Coins were released on August 30, 2007 and limited to a maximum authorized mintage of 40,000. The coins sold out on the first day of issue. Released on the same schedule as the Presidential Dollar program, the First Spouse gold bullion coins are struck in .9999 fine gold and weigh one-half ounce and has the denomination of $10. Each coin contains .500 troy ounces of pure gold. Dates and designs of our choice. The 1/2 ounce First Spouse $10 gold coin series honors this behind-the-scenes work that has fundamentally shaped our nation. Authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, each First Spouse Gold Coin is struck in 24 karat and contains one-half ounce of gold. The coins carry a legal tender face value of $10.

The Obverse

The Obverse of the coin, designed by Robert Scot and re-sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, was used on the Draped Bust Half Cent coin produced between 1800 and 1808.

The Reverse

The reverse of the coin, designed and sculpted by Charles Vickers, features a monument to Thomas Jefferson located at his former home in Monticello. Engraved on the monument is the wordage "Here was buried Thomas Jefferson Author of The Declaration of American Independence of the Statue of Virginia for Religious Freedom and Father of the University of Virginia Born April 2, 1748, O.S. Died July 4, 1826."
