  • Title: $2.5 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle AU Condition

Full Description

As the U.S. Mint prepared to produce the Quarter Eagle in 1908, the design of the small coins was called into question because its high-relief images would be difficult to strike. Then-president Theodore Roosevelt suggested the design be incused, or depressed below the level of the flat surfaces. Sculptor Bela Pratt went to work on the Indian Head design and production began in 1908. This Quarter Eagle was not circulated much, but was often given as a Christmas gift. Offered here in Almost Uncirculated condition, this coin makes a great addition to any numismatic coin collection.

Created by sculptor Bela Lyons Pratt, the obverse design of an American Indian in full feathered headdress presents an enduring image of Native American dignity, power and wisdom. Above the Indian is the word ‘Liberty,’ while below is the year. Thirteen stars around the side edges of the coin represent the 13 original colonies.

The reverse features an American eagle holding a bundle of arrows in its talons. An olive branch curves in front of the arrows, signifying peace. Above the eagle are the words ‘United States of America.’ To the left is the motto ‘E Pluribus Unum’ and to the right is the motto ‘In God We Trust.’ Below the eagle is the face value of ‘2 1/2 Dollars.’
