Full Description

In 1917, the Standing Liberty Quarter first released in 1916 was altered. While small changes are not uncommon on coins in a series, this change was made to appease Americans outraged by any appearance of nudity. The 1916 and early 1917 Standing Liberty Quarters shows Liberty with a bare right breast and become known as Type 1s after the design was reworked to show the iconic lady wearing chain mail. The 1917-D Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarters offered here are in Extremely Fine 45 condition, showing only limited wear on the high points. This coin is a must-have for collectors seeking to acquire coins in the Standing Liberty Quarter series.

Obverse

Herman MacNeil, under the supervision of U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber designed the Standing Liberty coin featuring Lady Liberty as a goddess holding an olive branch in one hand and brandishing a broadsword in the other. The design represented America’s ultimate goal of peace, but the country’s willingness to fight for right during World War I. The front of this quarter also features the motto ‘In God We Trvst,’ ‘Liberty’ and ‘1917.’ In this Type 1 design, Lady Liberty’s right breast shows bare.

Reverse

The back of the coin features a flying eagle. The coin also shows ‘United States’ and ‘Quarter Dollar.’
