Full Description

These gold G$1 LA Purch - Jefferson coins were raised with an intention to raise funds for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition which was held from April 30 to December 1, 1904 at St. louis. The Congressional Act of 1902 authorized the striking of 1,25,000 coin of both types- Jefferson and Mckinley. But this was too big a figure to be sold out and the authority took the decision to melt 1,07,600 coins of each type as unsold minted gold coins. As a result, only 17,500 coins of each type were left from each design.

Finding a problem-free specimen is very difficult today as most of these samples were used in jewellery. these commemorative coins were struck for over 23 years, but only 13 different issues were made. The most important designs among these were the 1915-S Panama Pacific coins with $50 denomination. These coins were in 2 shapes - round and octagonal.
