Along with the President Dollars, came the First Spouses Series of coins. This was authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. According to this Act, each year would witness the launch of 4 spouses coins along side the President's Dollars unless the President had more than one wife. In such a case 2 coins were released, one for each. Another case where the President didn't have a wife, the Mint decided to release the coins with the Obverse side portraying the Lady Liberty image that was being circulated during the President's era. These coins were to serve as an honor to the backstage heroes that have helped shape the United States.
The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, authorized the minting of the First Spouses Series along with the President Dollars. The Act provided for 4 pairs of coins to be released each year. These coins will be released in honor of four Presidents and their respective wives per year. The motive behind the First Spouses Gold series coin was to make popular among the common people, the hard work that these ladies have put behind the scenes.
This Gold First Spouse Coin was released on July 2, 2009, and was the 10th Commemorative Coin, released in the 3rd year of the series. It is struck from ? ounce of .9999 24-karat gold. The obverse is her regal portrait, designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. The reverse depicts Mrs. Tyler and her two oldest children behind their Cedar Grove Plantation, and was designed by Susan Gamble and Sculpted by Norm Nemeth.
