First Spouse Series – Julia Tyler 2009

The First Spouse Gold Coins

The United States Mint is honoring our nation’s first spouses by issuing one-half ounce $10 gold coins featuring their images in the order they served as first spouse.  The United States Mint issues First Spouse Gold Coins on the same schedule as the Presidential $1 Coins honoring the presidents.

$10 Julia Tyler Julia Tyler married John Tyler after the death of his first wife. Julia proved to be instrumental in several dealings that we take for granted today. According to her husband, Julia’s gentle persuasion led to the annexation of Texas. Also, Julia was the first to suggest playing “Hail to the Chief” to announce the arrival of the President. Designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart, the proof and the uncirculated coin feature a beautiful portrait of Julia on the obverse. The reverse showcases President John Tyler and Julia dancing together at a White House Ball.
