This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the Mercury Dime’s creation, a coin that had a 29 year run in the American monetary system! Hailing from the tail-end of what has been called the American Renaissance in minting design and creation, the Mercury Dime was created by the very same artist who created the Walking Liberty design featured in modernity, on the Silver Bullion American Eagle Coin.
Featuring the leftward facing profile of Lady Liberty, who because she bears such a striking resemblance to the winged footed Mercury, has become known as the “Mercury Dime.” Donning a winged phrygian cap, more commonly known as a “Liberty” cap, the headwear bears a striking resemblance to the winged helmet worn by the messenger god: Lady Liberty paints a remarkable image, one that has become iconic in the numismatic community.
On the back, or reverse of the coin, is depiction of a Roman fasces: a bundle of wooden rods with an axe blade included that was typically carried around by civil servants who acted as bodyguards for the magistrates. Surrounding the fasces is an olive branch, making the symbolization of the design tied into the power of peace and war: a theme typically associated with many numismatic and iconic American designs.
First minted in 1916, the Mercury Dime was minted for American currency until 1945 when it was replaced by the Roosevelt Dime we see today. A few remain valuable today, such as the 1916D Mercury Dime which in MS65 condition could command as much as $28,000!
Today, the Mercury Dime has gained a new lease on life with the re-minting of the design on the 2016 1/10 Ounce Gold Mercury Dime Centennial Coin. Minted using one-tenth troy ounce of 24-karat gold, which is symbolic of the coin’s original denomination, the coin is struck with a business strike finish. Updates to the original design include the new date “2016” on the obverse, and the addition of the weight and purity of the gold coin on the reverse design.
