Soon after 1964 came the time when the value of silver exceeded the face value of the coins. This is when the government decided to stop using pure silver. As a result, the mints were ordered to use 40% silver instead of 90%.These coins were then made with a mixture of copper and silver with 40% silver and 60% copper.
