Along with the President Dollars, came the First Spouses Series of coins. This was authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. According to this Act, each year would witness the launch of 4 spouses coins along side the President's Dollars unless the President had more than one wife. In such a case 2 coins were released, one for each. Another case where the President didn't have a wife, the Mint decided to release the coins with the Obverse side portraying the Lady Liberty image that was being circulated during the President's era. These coins were to serve as an honor to the backstage heroes that have helped shape the United States.

Dolley Madison's coin was the fourth in the series. Dolley was wife to James Madison who served as the President from 1809 to 1817.
