Full Description

In 1886, France gave the U.S. the spectacular gift of the Statue of Liberty, a 300-foot-tall figure that towers over the New York Harbor. The statue has welcomed newly-arrived immigrants to America since that time, offering them hope and a first glimpse of the spirit of freedom so precious to Americans. One hundred years later, the 1986 Statue of Liberty Half Dollar commemorated that gift and the immigrants whose first memories of America include the stunning Lady. Offered here in Proof 69 condition as certified by the NGC Brown Label, this is an Ultra Cameo coin with sharp contrasts between the mirrored flat surfaces and the frosted raised devices.

Obverse

On the front of the coin is a brilliant image of the Statue of Liberty holding high her torch of freedom as she stands facing toward a large sun with bright rays spreading out in the background. Also on the obverse are the words ‘Liberty’ and ‘In God We Trust,’ as well as the year of issue.

Reverse

The reverse of the Statue of Liberty half dollar displays a group of immigrants – a man, two women and a child – along with their baggage. They stand looking out over New York Harbor toward the City of New York, perhaps dreaming of the new and more prosperous life they expect to find there. Also on the reverse are the words ‘United States of America,’ ‘A Nation of Immigrants,’ ‘E Pluribus Unum,’ and the denomination of ‘Half Dollar.’
