Full Description

The 1942 Mercury Dime has always been a favorite of coin collectors. These coins featured a design with a low rim, which caused them to wear down very quickly. This proof coin was graded as PF66, indicating that it is in Uncirculated condition with only minor imperfections.

Obverse

Adolph A. Weinman created the design for the Mercury dime. It features a young Lady Liberty wearing a winged cap. Weinman later said the winged cap represented liberty of thought. A tightly-ringed row of curls peeks out from beneath Lady Liberty’s cap.It is generally believed that the model for Lady Liberty was Elsie Stevens, Weinman’s former tenant and the wife of Wallace Stevens who was then a lawyer but in later life was known for his poetry. Also on the front of the coin are the word ‘Liberty,’ the motto ‘In God We Trust,’ the date, and Weinman’s initials ‘AW.’

Reverse

The reverse of this dime features a battle ax and fasces tied together with leather bands, the complete image symbolizing war and justice. Also on the reverse are the words ‘United States of America,’ the motto ‘E Pluribus Unum,’ and the denomination of ‘One Dime.’
