Full Description

Krugerrand is a South African gold coin that was conceptualized in 1964, and first minted on 3rd, July, 1967 at the South African Mint. Krugerrands are not marked with a rand value. This is because of the exclusivity behind the 1 oz gold Krugerrand, that their value is derived from the current value of gold. These became popular in the early 1980s, when they held 89% market share of the entire gold bullion coin industry.

The obverse side bears the face of the four-term president of South African Republic, Paul Kruger. The image is designed by Otto Schultz along with the word 'South Africa' inscribed in both Afrikaans and English.

The reverse phase is designed by Coert Steynberg that showcases a springbok, the national symbol of South Africa. The mint year is also imprinted on this side. But the rand value is shown on either side.

Product Specifications:

  • 32.77 mm in diameter
  • 2.84 mm thick
  • Minted in 1967

The Krugerrand became quite popular around late 1970s and early 1980s which led to the minting of gold coins in other countries like United States (US Gold Eagle, 1986) and Canada (Canadian Maple Leaf, 1979).
