Molon Labe, meaning “come and take it” is a traditional Greek phrase expressing defiance, believed to be spoken by the Spartan King Leonidas when the Persian armies demanded the surrender of their weapons. The expression is commemorated in this one-ounce silver art medal. Contains: 1 Troy Ounce .999 Fine Silver Obverse: The Detailed depiction of Soldier in Spartan regalia kneeling on the corpses of the enemy while holding a shield in his left hand and a spear in his right while being showered with arrows from the enemy forces, and the words “MOLON LABE” around the top. In celebration of the opening of the Panamá Canal, the City of San Francisco hosted the Panamá-Pacific Exposition. In commemoration of the event, the United States Mint struck a variety of both silver and gold coins which included a $50 round and $50 octagonal. Apart from Patterns and semi-official Territorial gold coins, the United States had never issued a $50 gold piece. Contains: 2 Troy Ounces of .999 Fine Silver Obverse: Left-Facing bust of Minerva, the Roman goddess wearing a crested helmet, the date appears in Roman numerals at the top of Minerva’s shield. “IN GOD WE TRUST” is seen above Minerva’s head, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around the upper circumference of the coin and “TWO TROY OUNCES” around the bottom. Reverse: A depiction of an Owl perched on a Ponderosa Pine, surrounded by cones. The beaded border is repeated again on the reverse, separating the central design from the legends, “PANAMA PACIFIC EXPOSITION” and “SAN FRANCISCO” on around the periphery. “E PLURIBUS UNUM” can be seen to the right of the Owl, with “.999 FINE AG” below. On May 27, 1837, Wild Bill Hickok, byname of James Butler Hickok was born in Homer, Illinois, now known as Troy Grove. He was raised in Illinois in a time of rampant lawlessness and vigilante activity caused by the rise of the “Banditti of the Prarie.” The Banditti was a loose-knit gang of criminals that plagued Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio during the early-to-mid 19th century. Hickok was drawn to the ruffian lifestyle and headed west at the age of 18. Contains: 2 Troy Ounce .999 Fine Silver Obverse: A depiction of Wild Bill Hickok based on one of the most famous photos known. “WILD BILL HICKOK” above the portrait curved along the circumference. Reverse: The common reverse for the series, it includes many iconic images of the old west. Centered, a blank badge wrapped with a cowboy’s rope, a horned bull skull centered, with opposing six-shooters at 10 and 2 o’clock, and finally, two horseshoes at three o’clock, and a small badge at nine o’clock with the Intaglio mint mark. Hallmark at 6 o’clock curved on the lower circumference.
