The Reverse image was designed by Susan Gamble, and sculpted by Don Everhart. Both worked in tandem to bring to life the image of the homely Martha Washington sewing a button on her husband’s uniform coat during his time as a General in the Continental Army. Lady Washington was known for her care and support of the militia during the Revolution, and showed her resolve by organizing sick wards, persuading ladies of society to roll bandages made from their napkins and tablecloths, and repairing uniforms for the poorly equipped soldiers of the Continental Army.
