The 2014 Silver Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative coin set hit it out of the park when it was voted Coin of the Year at the World Money Fair held in Berlin, Germany. The international judging panel concluded their voting on December 6, 2015 with awards being presented on February 6, 2016 in a ceremony at the World Money Fair and won Most Innovative out of the 10 categories presented. All coins considered for this year’s awards were released from banks and mints around the world in 2014 and offer the best in theme, marketing, and design.
The commemorative set included gold, silver, and clad coins and earned awards for two of the three coins. The coin of the year, the Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Silver Dollar, was first chosen as Most Innovative and the set is the a marvel of engineering as it is the first curved cupped coins minted. The set was carefully chosen by the Department of the Treasury after a month-long, nationwide competition during which 128 designs were submitted. After consulting with the United States Commission of Fine Arts and the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Department of the Treasury settled on the Cassie McFarland design to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the National Baseball Hall of Fame with the department’s first curved coin.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame, in Cooperstown, New York, enjoyed a boost in profit after the release of the commemorative coin set, allowing it to enjoy only the third year of profits out of the last thirteen. Aside from energizing the finances of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the coin set with all of its awards, allowed for global exposure of both the game and the institution garnering new fans of the favorite American past-time.
