The 2008 Louisa Adams Gold Coin was the sixth issue of the First Spouse Gold Coin Program, which provided for the issuance of one-half ounce 24 karat gold coins for the First Ladies. Coins were released on May 29, 2008 and limited to a maximum authorized mintage of 40,000. By the end of sales, the US Mint sold a combined 11,677 across uncirculated and proof options.

Released on the same schedule as the Presidential Dollar program, the First Spouse gold bullion coins are struck in .9999 fine gold and weigh one-half ounce and has the denomination of $10. Each coin contains .500 troy ounces of pure gold. The 1/2 ounce First Spouse $10 gold coin series honors this behind-the-scenes work that has fundamentally shaped our nation. Authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, each First Spouse Gold Coin is struck in 24 karat and contains one-half ounce of gold. The coins carry a legal tender face value of $10.

The obverse of the coin, designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, features a portrait of the First Lady. The obverse features a portrait of Louisa Adams as well as the term that she served as First Lady.

The Reverse

The reverse of the coin, designed and sculpted by Joseph Menna, depicts a younger Louisa Adams and her son Charles making a journey across Europe in order to rejoin husband and father in Paris.
