  • Metal: Silver

Full Description

It was 1995, just a year before the 100th modern Olympic games. As the world prepared for the XXVI Summer Olympics, the San Francisco Mint produced this 1995 S Olympic Basketball Half Dollar to commemorate the event and raise funds for the games. The half-dollar coin is struck in copper and nickel with a pure copper center. Ideal for sports fans and collectors of commemorative coins.

Obverse

The front of the coin, designed by Clint Hansen and Al Maletsky, features basketball players jumping for a rebound shot. Also on the obverse are the word ‘Liberty,’ the motto ‘In God We Trust,’ ‘XXVI Olympiad,’ the US Olympic logo with five interconnected circles, both artists’ initials, and the year 1995.

Reverse

The reverse of this coin was designed by T. James Ferrell. It shows a globe with the Atlantic Ocean in the center partly covered by the 100th Olympic Committee Atlanta logo, which contains the five interconnected circles with the Olympic Torch above. Also on the back of the coin are the words ‘United States of America,’ the motto ‘E Pluribus Unum’ and the denomination of ‘Half Dollar.’
