  • Metal: Silver

Full Description

In 1916, the U.S. Mint began producing Standing Liberty Quarters featuring Lady Liberty with one breast bared. This caused no small public outrage, and the quarter design was altered late in 1917. The 1916 and early 1917 quarters became known as Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarters, while the redesigned coin showing Liberty’s right breast covered by chain mail became known as Type 2. The 1917-D Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter offered here is presented in XF40 or Extremely Fine 40 condition as certified by NGC. As such, it shows little or medium wear on the high points only and may even retain some mint luster.

Obverse

Herman MacNeil, under the supervision of U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber designed the Standing Liberty coin featuring Lady Liberty as a goddess holding an olive branch in one hand and brandishing a broadsword in the other. The design represented America’s ultimate goal of peace, but the country’s willingness to fight for right during World War I. The front of this quarter also features the motto ‘In God We Trvst,’ ‘Liberty’ and ‘1917.’ In this Type 1 design, Lady Liberty’s right breast shows bare.

Reverse

The back of the coin features a flying eagle. The coin also shows ‘United States’ and ‘Quarter Dollar.’
