Full Description

Even after the production of Gold Dollars and Three Dollar Gold pieces ceased in 1889, the mintages of Quarter Eagles remained low. The higher denominations, Half Eagles through Double Eagles, were favored for bullion reserves and international trade. After bottoming out with a production of 2,440 pieces in 1892, however, Quarter Eagle mintages steadily rose thereafter until World War I interrupted overseas shipments.

For the 1901 issue, 91,100 pieces were struck. Mint State survivors are not rare, although they are encountered considerably less often than the high mintage final year of the type, 1907.
