Full Description

The scarcest of the gold dollar series, the Type II Indian Head Gold Dollar features the image of Miss Liberty wearing a feathered Indian headdress on the obverse and a wreath encircling the denomination and date on the reverse.

The diameter of the Type II Indian head gold dollar was increased from the 13mm of the Type I to 15mm, making the coins easier to handle. However, due to a flaw in the gold dollar’s design, the coin did not strike up well and most showed noticeable weakness near the numerals of the date. So, the Type II Indian Head design was only minted from 1854 to 1856, when it was replaced by a new gold dollar design.

Product Specifications:

  • Designer: James Barton Longacre
  • Diameter: 14.3 millimeters
  • Metal content:
  • Gold - 90%
  • Silver and Copper - 10%
