In 1793, the U.S. government minted its first dollar coin, now known as the Flowing Hair coin. Its 32.6mm diameter and 1/2 troy ounce of silver is based on the Spanish dollar that was used in trade throughout North, Central and South America. It was struck within 2 years after the U.S. Mint was authorized to produce it by the Coinage Act of 1792.
